Acalypha 'Inferno' (Copperleaf)
Tropical shrub to around 10' if allowed to grow unchecked. Regular pruning (4x/year) maintains them at desired height and fullness. Grown for colorful foliage, which comes in all manner of variations including white, pink, yellow, orange, red, bronze, purple and even green. There are scores of cultivars and lots of confusion about ID in the trade, so in-person selection probably necessary. Admittedly, a risky choice as frost will likely result in total leaf drop but plant will usually leaf out once long-term warm weather returns and worth the risk for its lovely mix of pink, magenta and plum-colored foliage.
Prune 3 to 4 times a year to maintain shape and size desired. This will be classic "heading back" pruning. Cut about 8" shorter than desired height of 4-5', just above a node and new growth will quickly flush to cover cuts and renew desired bushy appearance. Resist pruning during cold winter weather, even if some leaf drop occurs due to extreme temperatures. Allow plants to flush with new growth in spring before doing any drastic pruning.
